A Viking Invasion

Tore has a hobby shop in Grimstad, Norway, is building a cool layout in his home and has a neat blog about his layout here.  He and six of his Norwegian friends,  Petter Ramsdal, Eric Kalvik, John Erik Kristiansen, Tore Uruik, Jon Einar Vistad, and Terje Ollestad , are touring the middle Atlantic region of the U.S. to visit train sites and model railroads. Back home most of them live near or within a few hours drive of  the town of Stavanger on the south west coast of Norway. They are members of a model railroad club there.

Jon, Petter, Tore U., John, Terje, Tore H., Erik (L to R)
Thanks to some coordination from Marty McGuirk, they will get to visit six Washington, DC region layouts including Paul Dolkos', Steve Williams', Pete LaGuardia's, Matt Thompson's, Marty McGuirk's and mine.

They arrived promptly at 7:30. After watching the intro film, I handed them throttles, showed them how to use the link and pins, and set them loose on the layout. The layout ran great. I did not see or hear any problems and they all got chances to operate and take pictures. AW made brownies, we laser cut some stuff and in general had a great time. They taught me how to say "civil war" in Norwegian. It is borgerkrigen. It sounds like it reads in English, but the r's get rolled and have a guttural sound.

We come from the land of the ice and snow
from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow

The hammer of the gods will drive our ships to new lands
To fight the horde and sing and cry, Valhalla, I am coming

On we sweep with, with threshing oar
Our only goal will be the western shore

  2. Hello Bernie!

Thank you for you great hospitality, we had a great time in your basement.

It's a really impressive layout you have there, and very "out of the box" I must say :-)

I don't realize that you was the author of the book "Steel Mills" before we visit you.

A great book! I will read it again tonight.

Take a look at my blog at:
