Decisions, decisions!

I was adding the decking to Burnside Wharf when Alicia took a look at the work in progress.  She said she thought the scene looked better without the warehouse on the wharf.   The actual Burnside Wharf did not have any warehouses on the pier. Omitting the warehouse would be more prototypical.

So, I thought I'd give it a try. I first finished painting the portions of the ship that were hidden by the warehouse.  Then, I took two comparison photos. What do you think -  with the warehouse or without?

If I don't place the warehouse on the wharf, I do have another place on the layout where I can use it.

  1. Do what the Boss "suggests"... Oh, and be more prototypical while you are at it. ;-)
    Beautiful scen both ways, IMO.

  3. Like the warehouse; breaks up the eye movement.

  4. I think she may be on to something there. Sans Warehouse looks better, IMHO.

  5. Without is much better. I'm not a fan of low relief buildings, or buildings hard up against a backscene, as the sight lines are always messed up and it's hard to avoid shadows.

  6. Without...Everyone likes to see a fully rigged ship and take time to look at all of the exquisite detail...and the warehouse negates that...add loaders and seamen and you have a beautiul little vignette

  7. My wife and I agree. Remove the warehouse. "What is behind it is wonderful," says she. I quite agree. Having seen prototype photos you have posted of the scene in the past, the model version without the warehouse better captures the feel I recall.

  9. I seem to be in the majority as I too like the scene without the warehouse. Can't go wrong following the prototype.

  10. Tough choice. I like the building and think it looks good although the painting of the ship gives a much better representation of the open space of the harbor, which is what I assume you are trying to capture. That said, what breaks the tie for me is the fact that the actual historic location, Burnside Wharf, had no warehouse on the pier. Pulling the structure seems to be the right decision. Your wife is always right!
